Destination guide
Know before you go
Popular for Lake towns, easy hill walks and short family trips
What you can do
- Row a boat on Naini Lake, then take the ropeway to Snow View Point
- Walk the Nainital Mall Road in the evening and the Tiffin Top trail in the morning
- Move to Bhimtal and Sattal for quieter lakes and birdwatching
- Add Jim Corbett National Park if you want a safari on the way in or out
Food to try
Kumaoni home cooking is underrated: bhatt ki churkani, aloo ke gutke, bal mithai sweets and madua roti. Nainital's bakeries are a leftover from the British years, and the local chai stops are the best part of the drive.
Culture & customs
The hills keep their own temples, folk songs and fairs, and people are warm but private. Dress modestly at temples, and expect traffic to build on weekends when Delhi drives up for two days.
Best time to visit
March to June, September to November
Spring and autumn are the clearest. Monsoon from July to mid September brings landslides on the ghat roads, and December to February is cold with occasional snow in the higher towns.
