Destination guide
Know before you go
Popular for Kanchenjunga views, tea estates and Himalayan monasteries
What you can do
- Get to Tiger Hill before dawn for the sunrise on Kanchenjunga
- Ride the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway on the Ghum loop section
- Tour a tea estate such as Happy Valley and taste the first flush properly
- In Gangtok, visit Rumtek monastery and take the Tsomgo Lake day trip with the permit arranged
Food to try
Momos and thukpa are everywhere, along with Sikkimese phagshapa, gundruk soup and churpi cheese. Darjeeling tea is best bought at an estate or a proper tea room rather than a souvenir shop.
Culture & customs
Nepali, Tibetan, Bhutia and Lepcha communities live side by side here, and Buddhist monasteries set the rhythm. Walk clockwise around stupas, dress modestly in monasteries, and expect a foreigner permit process for parts of Sikkim.
Best time to visit
March to May, October to December
Spring adds rhododendrons and autumn gives the clearest mountain views. The June to September monsoon is heavy with landslide risk on the hill roads, and January is cold with occasional snow.
