Destination guide
Know before you go
Popular for Wadis, forts, empty coastline and mountain air
What you can do
- See Muscat in a day: Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque, Mutrah souq and the corniche at dusk
- Swim in Wadi Shab or Wadi Bani Khalid, both a short drive from the capital
- Stay a night on Jabal Akhdar for rose terraces, cool air and canyon views
- Add Nizwa fort and the Friday goat market if your dates allow
Food to try
Omani food is gentle and slow cooked: shuwa lamb, majboos rice, mashuai kingfish and dates with kahwa. Mutrah and Qurum have good Indian and Lebanese options, and halal is standard everywhere.
Culture & customs
Oman is the quiet neighbour of the Gulf and prefers it that way. Dress modestly in towns, greet before asking directions, and expect people to go out of their way for visitors.
Best time to visit
October to April
Winter gives warm days for wadis and mountains. Salalah is the exception: the khareef monsoon from June to September turns the south green and cool while the rest of the country bakes.
