Destination guide
Know before you go
Popular for Dal Lake houseboats, Mughal gardens and Himalayan meadows
What you can do
- Take a shikara across Dal Lake in the early morning when the floating market is out
- Stay one night on a houseboat, then move to a hotel for the rest of the trip
- Ride the Gulmarg gondola, which climbs to 3,980m in two stages
- Walk the Betaab and Aru valleys near Pahalgam instead of rushing between viewpoints
Food to try
Kashmiri Wazwan is the reason to come hungry: rogan josh, gushtaba and tabak maaz, cooked slowly with fennel and dry ginger. Lighter options are haak greens with rice, and nadru lotus stem, finished with pink noon chai and saffron kahwa.
Culture & customs
Kashmiri life is shaped by craft and the seasons, from pashmina weaving and papier mache to walnut wood carving. Hospitality is formal and warm, and a guest is always offered kahwa before any conversation starts.
Best time to visit
April to October
April and May bring tulips and blossom, June to August is the comfortable summer escape, and September to October gives clear air and chinar colour. December to February is snow season in Gulmarg with road closures possible.
