Destination guide
Know before you go
Popular for Petra, Wadi Rum desert camps and floating in the Dead Sea
What you can do
- Give Petra two days: the Siq and Treasury on day one, the Monastery climb on day two
- Sleep one night in a Wadi Rum camp for the silence and the stars
- Float in the Dead Sea, use the mud, and rinse quickly afterwards
- Add Jerash for Roman streets or Mount Nebo and Madaba on the way south
Food to try
Mansaf is the national dish, lamb with fermented yoghurt over rice, and it is a shared plate. Also try makloubeh, zarb cooked underground in Wadi Rum, knafeh in Amman and strong cardamom coffee.
Culture & customs
Bedouin hospitality shapes the experience, and tea will be offered more often than you can drink it. Dress modestly outside resorts, and Fridays are the weekend so some sites open late.
Best time to visit
March to May, September to November
Spring adds wildflowers to Petra and comfortable hiking temperatures. Summer in Wadi Rum and the Dead Sea passes 40C, and January nights in Petra can drop near freezing.
