Destination guide
Know before you go
Popular for Quiet island resorts, clear lagoons and privacy
What you can do
- Snorkel straight off the house reef, or take a guided boat to a deeper coral garden
- Book one sunset dolphin cruise and keep the rest of the evenings free
- Try a sandbank picnic or a private dinner on the beach for an anniversary
- Spend a half day on a local island such as Maafushi to see everyday Maldivian life
Food to try
Resort menus are international, but the Maldivian dishes are worth ordering: mas huni with roshi for breakfast, garudhiya fish broth, and tuna curries with coconut. Local islands serve short eats such as gulha and bajiya in small cafes.
Culture & customs
The Maldives is a Muslim country and local islands are conservative, so swimwear stays on resort beaches or marked bikini beaches. Halal food is standard and alcohol is served only on resort islands and liveaboards.
Best time to visit
November to April
The dry north-east monsoon brings calm seas and clear water. May to October is greener and cheaper with short heavy showers, and surf is better on the eastern atolls.
