Destination guide
Know before you go
Popular for Colonial hill stations, pine forests and snow for first timers
What you can do
- Walk the Shimla Mall Road and the Ridge in the evening, when the town comes out
- Ride the Kalka to Shimla toy train, a narrow gauge line on the UNESCO list
- In Manali, see Hadimba temple, Solang valley and the Old Manali cafes
- Add Atal Tunnel and Sissu for snow views if the road is open for your dates
Food to try
Himachali home food is simple and warming: siddu bread, chana madra, babru and rajma chawal. Manali's cafe scene does good trout, Tibetan thukpa and momos, with hot chai at every roadside stop.
Culture & customs
Villages here still follow local deities and their festivals, and wooden temples are built in a style found nowhere else. People are unhurried and reserved, so ask before photographing anyone at a temple.
Best time to visit
March to June, September to November
Summer is the classic escape from the plains, and October gives clear mountain views. December to February brings snow and long transfers, and the July monsoon carries a real landslide risk on these roads.
