Destination guide
Know before you go
Popular for Beaches, Portuguese heritage, seafood and nightlife
What you can do
- Split the trip: north Goa for the markets and beach shacks, south for the quiet sand
- Visit Old Goa for Basilica of Bom Jesus and Se Cathedral in one morning
- Take a Mandovi river cruise, or a dolphin boat from Palolem in the south
- Add a spice plantation tour or the Saturday night market at Arpora
Food to try
Goan food is coastal and Portuguese influenced: fish curry rice, prawn balchao, chicken cafreal, pork vindaloo and bebinca for dessert. Shack meals are cheap and fresh, and feni is the local spirit.
Culture & customs
Four hundred and fifty years of Portuguese rule left churches, azulejo tiles and a Catholic and Hindu mix that is unique in India. Beaches are relaxed but the towns are not, so cover up away from the sand.
Best time to visit
November to February
Peak season is dry and warm with the highest prices around Christmas and New Year. June to September closes many shacks for the monsoon, when Goa is green, cheap and very quiet.
