Destination guide
Know before you go
Popular for Rice terraces, temples, surf beaches and spa days
What you can do
- Start in Ubud for the Tegalalang terraces, the Campuhan ridge walk and the art markets
- See a water temple at Tirta Empul or the clifftop Uluwatu at sunset
- Take a day trip to Nusa Penida for Kelingking beach, or keep it easy with a catamaran cruise
- Book a Balinese massage or a cooking class on the afternoon you plan to slow down
Food to try
Warungs serve nasi campur, mie goreng and satay for very little. Try babi guling only if pork is acceptable to you; halal restaurants and Indonesian Muslim warungs are common in Denpasar, Kuta and Nusa Dua.
Culture & customs
Bali is Hindu in a mostly Muslim country, so daily offerings sit on pavements and should be stepped around. A sarong is required at temples and is usually lent at the entrance.
Best time to visit
April to October
The dry season is best for beaches and diving. Nyepi, the day of silence in March, closes the whole island including the airport for 24 hours, so check the date before booking.
