Assamese food is light and sour: masor tenga fish curry, khar, pitha rice cakes and endless tea. Meghalaya's Khasi kitchen does jadoh rice with meat, dohneiiong pork with black sesame, and tungrymbai fermented beans.
Meghalaya's Khasi and Jaintia communities are matrilineal, with property passing to the youngest daughter. Assam's Bihu festival marks the farming year, and both states are relaxed, green and less visited than the rest of India.
October to April
October to March is dry and best for trekking and river clarity. Cherrapunji is one of the wettest places on earth from June to September, which is spectacular but hard to walk in.
Begin through Guwahati with a short city stay or a carefully timed onward transfer. Avoid adding too many visits after arrival.
Use Shillong as a comfortable base for nearby scenery. Pick viewpoints and walks according to weather, access and your family’s mobility.
