Five days in Dubai with children

A realistic plan that mixes one big attraction a day with beach time, and leaves room for the afternoon heat.

Five days in Dubai with children

One headline attraction a day is enough

Dubai tempts you into three things a day and then the whole family is tired by Wednesday. Give each day one anchor: Burj Khalifa and the fountain, a water park, a beach morning, Old Dubai and the abra crossing, and one day kept deliberately loose. Children remember the day they were not rushed more than the day they saw four landmarks.

Time the day around the heat

From May to September, outdoor plans work before eleven in the morning and after five in the afternoon. The middle of the day belongs to indoor attractions, hotel pools or a long lunch. In winter the opposite is true and the beach stays comfortable all day, which is why hotel prices jump between November and March.

Where to stay for a family

Downtown puts you near the Burj and the mall but not the sea. JBR and Marina put you on the beach with restaurants in walking distance, which usually suits families better. Deira and Bur Dubai are cheaper and closer to the old city, but plan on taxis or metro for everything else. Whatever you choose, look for connecting rooms rather than one room with an extra bed.

The things people forget

Aquaventure and Atlantis need a full day, not an afternoon. Desert safaris with dune bashing are not ideal for very young children, and most operators offer a calmer conservation reserve alternative. Book Burj Khalifa in advance for a fixed slot, carry water everywhere, and remember that many attractions have minimum height rules that are worth checking before you promise anything.
